The Discount Method System is a powerful tool, that lets you offer specialized discounts to your customers. There are many different type of discounts that can be applied. This article is intended to show some of the common discount types, and how to set them up.

Free Shipping

Free shipping is one of the most often used discounts.

If you look in the picture above, you'll see I have a Free Shipping setup. The Method name isn't required to be Free Shipping, but good practice dictates that you should name the discount something informative so you know what it is at a glance. The Discount Action is set to subtract 100 percent from the shipping (free shipping). I have the rule definition set to Total dollars greater than $45.00. Whenever a customer has a subtotal of more than $45.00 in their cart, the free shipping rule will kick in and subtract 100 percent from their shipping. You can always had more rule definitions to discounts. If you have more than one rule, and need the customer to fall into true for multiple definitions, make sure to mark the discount as strict. That way all the conditions under the definitions have to be true for the discount to kick in. If its not marked as strict, the discount will kick in if any of the rule definitions are true.

Add a Free Item to Cart

Adding a free item into the customers cart is a great way to create customer loyalty, so that they'll return to your page for future orders.

In this picture, the method name is "Add Free Item ID 41 to Cart". We can easily identify the discount method with that name if we're looking at our discount method lists. The discount action adds Item ID 41 to the customers cart. We have it set to only once per customer, so that a customer can't make multiple small orders and receive a large quantity of Item ID 41 for free. There are two rule definitions in place. The customer has to have Item ID 40 in their cart, and at checkout they have to input coupon code GIMMEAFREEITEMPLZ. The discount method is marked as strict, so that the customer has to fall under both rules for them to receive the free item.

Subtract $10 from Specific Item

This is a great discount for cutting your customers a deal.

The method name is Subtract 10 Dollars from Item ID 73, once again descriptive so we can find it in a hurry. The discount method subtracts 10 dollars from any matched item loaded in the cart. The rule definition is pointing to Item ID 73, so that is the item that will have $10 subtracted from it. We also have the customer type set to Wholesale customers, so that this discount only applies to the Wholesale Customer Type. We are only running this sale for today, so a date range has been input and the expires check box is turned on. We can also only offer 100 discounts, so we put 100 in the remaining uses. Each time this discount method gets used, it will subtract 1 from that number, until it reaches 0. We also only want each customer to only use it once, so that the savings can be spread across more than one customer. It is strict so that the Customer has Item ID 73 in the cart, and has to be a wholesale customer type.
