Discount methods can now specify multiple actions to take when the rules for the method pass. Each action can have its own set of rules that must also pass for the action to take place.
Create a discount by navigating to the Admin Console > Marketing > Discounts. Once on the discounts page click the new button to bring up the new discount overlay:
After filling out basic information for the discount, make sure to save. Now you can add an action by clicking the New Action button:
The new action menu will have many options to specify.
- Active (checkbox): Only actions that are set to active will apply on the live store.
- Strict (checkbox): Actions marked as strict will only applyif all the rules pass. Also, any (target) in cart rules will only pass if all items in the cart match the rule.
- Exclusive (checkbox): Only one exclusive action will apply per discount method. The first exclusive action, according to sort order, applies. The system ignores all other discounts.
- Sort Order (whole number): Actions for a discount method are evaluated and applied in the order of their sort.
After saving the action, the option to add action rules will now be available. Adding action rules work the same as adding discount method rules.
Note: Unlike discount methods, actions do not need any rules specified to activate.
In the setup shown below, we have a discount method with a single coupon rule. There are also two actions that subtract different percentages from the total when entering a coupon code. The 10% action has its own rule specifying that the total must be greater than $25 dollars. The 15% discount has a rule specifying that the total must be over $50.
Since both of the actions are marked as exclusive, only one action will apply. The actions are evaluated in the ascending order of their Sort order. In this example, the cart is worth $55, so 15% will subtract from the total.
You can see this discount method in action on the two shopping carts below. The shopping cart on the left has a total of $40 (above the 10% action threshold). The cart on the right has a total of $60 (above both the 15% and 10% threshold). Because of the exclusivity on the action items, the cart on the left is subtracting 10% from the total. The cart on the right is subtracting 15% from the total.
